Jul 2 - Betancourt was among 15 captives rescued from leftist guerrillas by Colombian troops posing as aid workers. rescue was a huge coup for popular President Alvaro Uribe, an anti-guerrilla hard-liner who has used billions of dollars in U.S. aid to put the rebels on the defensive.

Sami al-Hajj, the Al Jazeera cameraman who was held by the US in its controversial Guantanamo prison, has been freed.
Al-Hajj, who had been on hunger strike for months in protest over his treatment in Guantanamo, was flown to Khartoum and taken immediately to hospital.

The Belarusian youth activist, Zmitser Dashkevich, has been released early from Sklou prison in Belarus. Zmitser was the subject of a global Amnesty International action last year calling for his release.
In an interview shortly after his release, Zmitser said that he thought his early release was due to international pressure.
