Coamo is known as La Villa Añeja or Old Village and was founded in July 15th. 1579 by Cristobal and Blas de Illescas. It is one of the oldest towns on the Island. The town's original name was San Blas de Illescas. Its population is a little over 37,000. It is famous for its thermal springs known as Los Baños de Coamo famous for their healing and therapeutic waters.

El Fuerte de San Felipe Del Morro, also known as "El Morro" was not considered build until 1787 although its foundations were laid in 1539. The massive structure suffered countless attacks from the likes of Sir Francis Drake in 1595 and the Dutch fleet in 1625 and in 1898 American ships fired on it during the Spanish -- American War, destroying its lighthouse, which was later destroyed.
