Air Conditioner Recharge
Most vehicle owners who have air conditioning in the car or truck have to worry about the system working properly all of the time. If something goes wrong, it is usually assumed that this means it needs an air conditioner recharge, but this is not always the case. The coolant will last for a long time, but there can be some minute leakage that needs to be replaced. These should never have a steady leakage though, as this is an environmental issue. Some states have laws in place that prohibit the recharge until a leak is fixed.
The substance that needs to be replaced for an air conditioner recharge is the same stuff that is used in freezers and refrigerators. This does not really cool the air as some people think. Rather, it removes the humidity and heat from the air, leaving the cooled and conditioned air that is soothing on the skin and less hot and moist than the air outside. As useful as this is, the substance is very toxic. When there is a leak of any sort, it has to be fixed.
There are other things that can cause the unit in the home or in the car to stop working properly, and it might not really need an air conditioner recharge. There are filters within any system that might need to be replaced. Because the units pull humidity out of the air, they can also put out dirt and bacteria. This is why it is called air conditioning rather than air cooling. If the filters become plugged, the machine or unit cannot work as well as it should. Once replaced, it might turn out that the air conditioner recharge was not needed after all.
The filters should be checked each year, but may not need to be changed that often. It depends on how often the air is used. It is always a good idea to have the system looked over when the car is getting a tune up or even an oil change, though not all places can include this in an oil change. A regular garage that does air conditioner recharge can also check the rest of the system for leaks and filter problems. If everything is okay and the air is not being cleaned and does not feel very cool, then it might be time for the air conditioner recharge. These check ups are especially important on older makes and models of cars and trucks.
